Employment Advocate
Maryline Suchley
Biography
Originally from the South West of England, I emigrated to New Zealand and now live in rural Canterbury, where I enjoy making the most of the outdoors.
Having worked across different sectors, I have gained valuable practical insight into people, workplace dynamics and employment relationships.
I understand that every workplace is different and that employment issues can be challenging, stressful, personal and difficult to navigate. Whether you are an employee who feels you have been treated unfairly or an employer trying to manage a challenging workplace situation, having someone in your corner who listens, understands your concerns and helps you work through your options can make a real difference.
As an employment advocate, my focus is on providing practical guidance, clear communication and respectful advocacy. I work with both employees and employers to help them understand their position, navigate the employment process and work towards a fair and constructive resolution.
I believe every situation deserves to be considered on its own merits. Behind every employment dispute are people, relationships and circumstances that need to be understood. I take the time to listen, establish the facts and help clients identify the options available to them, so they can make informed decisions about what happens next.
My approach is approachable, honest and practical. I aim to explain complex employment matters in plain language, provide realistic guidance and support clients through what can often be an unfamiliar and overwhelming process. Where possible, I believe in resolving issues early and constructively. Where a more formal approach is necessary, I help clients understand the process and prepare for the steps ahead.
I recognise that employees and employers can both find themselves in difficult positions. My role is to provide considered guidance and committed advocacy, while approaching each matter with professionalism, fairness and integrity.
I have extensive practical experience supporting both employees and employers through a wide range of employment disputes. This includes raising and responding to personal grievances, negotiating settlements and exit packages, and helping clients achieve resolutions both before and during mediation.
I also have considerable experience representing clients before the Employment Relations Authority (ERA), guiding them through the process from the initial stages of a dispute through to a formal hearing. I have successfully litigated a variety of employment issues, including workplace bullying, unjustified dismissal, and restraint of trade disputes.
I understand that employment disputes can be stressful and that knowing what to do next is not always straightforward. My experience allows me to support clients throughout the entire process, from exploring early resolution options and negotiating an outcome to preparing and presenting their case before the ERA. I aim to provide consistent, practical guidance at every stage, so clients understand their options and feel supported in making informed decisions.
I have also developed strong connections with the early childhood education (ECE) sector, providing extensive support to people and organisations within the industry. Through this work, I have developed specialist knowledge of the employment challenges that can arise in early childhood settings and an understanding of the wider considerations that can affect workplace relationships in this sector.
My focus is on combining practical experience, clear communication and committed advocacy to help clients navigate difficult situations and work towards fair and constructive outcomes.
Calm in conflict. Clear in action.
